Alexander Ballbach and Owen Salmi travel to the American Plains in late May to observe, document, and report severe weather, operating as National Weather Service SKYWARN® spotters. We will forecast which days the atmosphere is ripe for storm activity and move to get in the path of these storms by the time they form.
We will then follow the main circulation of the storms, documenting formation, cloud and storm structure, damage, and pracice the procedures necessary to operate as effective storm spotters. We hope to learn more about safely navigating around storms as well as the process of reporting information to the National Weather Service and the public.
